《青玉案•元夕》

東風夜放花千樹。更吹落、星如雨。寶馬雕車香滿路。鳳簫聲動,玉壺光轉,一夜魚龍舞。

蛾兒雪柳黃金縷。笑語盈盈暗香去。眾裡尋他千百度。驀然迴首,那人卻在,燈火闌珊處。

狹義的不定代名詞沒有廣義的「好玩」,但還是要先談。

狹義的不定代名詞包括:

someone

somebody

something

no one no-one

nobody

nothing

anyone

anybody

anything

everyone

everybody

everything

首先問你一個問題,anyone who is/was anyone是甚麼意思?

anyone who is/was anyone指「凡是有頭臉的人」。

例句:In those day, anyone who was anyone dined in that restaurant.

對上述狹義的不定代名詞要注意幾點:

第一注意點:

用作主詞時,狹義的不定代名詞都用單數動詞。

(When an indefinite pronoun is the subject, it takes a singular verb.)

1.      Everyone knows that.

2.      If anyone sees June, ask her to call me.

但在寫了一次狹義的不定代名詞之後,再提及該詞時,根據較新習慣,要用複數代名詞或複數代名詞所有格(以及,當然啦,複數動詞),以避免his or her等笨拙(awkward)表達。

(Today, common practice uses plural pronouns or possessives, and a plural verb, when referring back to indefinite pronouns, in order to avoid awkward expressions like his or her, etc.)

3.      Ask anyone, they’ll tell you.

4.      Has everyone eaten as much as they want?

5.      You can’t tell somebody why they’ve failed.(較老式的寫法是:You can’t tell somebody why he or she has failed.

6.      Everybody has their ups and downs.

7.      Has anybody finished their lunch yet?

8.      No one in their right mind goes on vacation there in January.

第二注意點:

指涉人的不定代名詞,可加apostrophe s (‘s),但指涉物的不定代名詞不可以。

(We can add apostrophe s (‘s) to pronouns that refer to people, but we do not usually add apostrophe s (‘s) to pronouns that refer to things.)

SAY: someone’s book

SAY: nobody’s business

DON’T SAY: something’s value

第三注意點:

不定代名詞之後可加else,以表示除前文說過以外的任何其他人物或事物,但動詞用單數。

(You can use ‘else’ after indefinite pronouns to denote any people or things other than those which have already been mentioned, and the structure takes a singular verb.)

9.      Everyone else is downstairs.

10.  I would like you to come, and anyone else who is free.

題外話:

Wh-words 也可以用else:

a.      Who else was there?

b.      What else did you get for your birthday?

c.       The book isn’t there. Where else should I look?

d.      He came to see you.  Why else (for what other reason) would he come?

e.      DON’T SAY: Which else

我上文累贅的用「狹義的不定代名詞」來指everyone, someone, anyone等詞,那麼何謂「廣義的不定代名詞」?

廣義的不定代名詞包括「表示數量」(amount or quantities)和「表示選擇」(choice or alternatives)的兩種:

「表示數量」(amount or quantities)的不定代名詞

11.  Many find it impossible to cope.

12.  We stood up, thinking through the possibilities. There weren’t many.

13.  Congratulations from all at the club.

14.  I had spent all I had, every last dollar.

15.  Judging by the comments, most want her to stay on.

16.  Twenty people were hurt.  Most are students.

17.  Although we lost a lot of stuff in the fire, some was saved.

18.  Some say it was an accident, but I don’t believe it.

19.  Enough has been said on this topic to fill a book.

20.  Although the MTR says efforts are being made, they are not doing enough.

「表示選擇」(choice or alternatives)的不定代名詞

21.  Can you bring me one of the wrenches(扳手)? Either will do.

22.  “Do you prefer tea or coffee?” “I don’t like either.”

23.  Neither was enthusiastic about a trading wedding.

24.  Neither of my parents likes my boyfriend.

25.  Some people like that sort of things. Others don’t.
