In Part B “Individual Response” of Paper 4, the examiner will ask you one or more questions.  You will have up to 1 minute to respond.  This post deals with some points on expressing yourself and demonstrates them with an example.

General points

1.          Be neat and tidy..

2.          Smile and greet your examiner with “Good morning/afternoon, sir/madam” etc.

examiner微笑打招呼,要講“Good morning/afternoon, sir/madam”

3.          Keep eye contact with the examiner.

4.          Nod appropriately when you are listening. to show you are paying attention, but don’t nod stupidly without stop!

5.          Don’t sigh or yawn.  (Have a good night’s sleep before the examination day.)

6.          Smile and say “goodbye” or “goodbye and thank you very much” before leaving.

即使你不滿意individual response的過程,離開前也要綻放出燦爛笑容,衷心examiner“goodbye” “goodbye and thank you very much”,最好說後者,禮多人不怪。

Specific point

7.          Our average speaking speed can be anywhere from 70 to 130 words per minute. Plan your response accordingly.

8.          Listen to the question carefully. Ask for a repeat of the question politely if you really miss my words.

9.          Don’t ask for another question even if you feel having difficulty with the first question, because (a) the examiner will deduct your marks; (b) your time for presentation will become less after the examiner read out a second question; (c) you may also feel having difficulty answering the second question! Will you then ask for a third question? This is an unworkable attitude.

10.      Don’t get “trapped” in the wording of the question. See the question in a wider perspective.  Answer the hidden question.  For example, your answer to the question “Would you like to go on a study tour” should not be limited to “Yes” or “No”.  You should of course talk about your reasons or experiences.

Would you like to go on a study tour,你不得只答YesNo。

11.      Show logical thinking.  Develop the ideas in your response systematically.  Use examples if necessary. Show some wisdom or talk about something interesting. Don’t talk passionately.

2012Paper 4問卷其中一個versionTips for writing a diaryPart B Individual Response 其中一條問題是Have you ever kept a diary試回應如下:

I have kept a diary since I was in Form 3.1 I kept my diary in English in the first few weeks and then wrote it in Chinese instead. 2 My first thought was that keeping an English diary could improve my English writing skills.  But it was so difficult to me, a Form 3 student then.  I was also worried that I might make some English grammatical mistakes in my diary unknowingly.3  I am not sure if my English would have been better if I persisted in writing down my daily experiences in English every day, but I am sure that my Chinese proficiency has improved a lot, thanks to my Chinese diary writing. (112 words)

1.      問題是Have you ever kept a diary? Yes, I haveNo, I haven’t就會失很多分。

2.      I kept my diary in English in the first few weeks and then wrote it in Chinese instead.

3.      But it was so difficult to me, a Form 3 student then.  I was also worried that I might make some English grammatical mistakes in my diary unknowingly. I am not sure if my English would have been better if I persisted in writing down my daily experiences in English every day, but I am sure that my Chinese proficiency has improved a lot, thanks to my Chinese diary writing.
