Different types of referent questions are frequently encountered in the DSE Exam. It takes flexibility and comprehensive thinking rather than any simple use of “skills” to tackle them.

2012Paper 1 - Part B2的題目

What might ‘this or that’ refer to?  Find TWO examples given in paragraph 4.

[4] China’s strict parenting guidelines, including the long hours of piano practice, the endless rules, the homework that never goes unfinished, the lack of playdates, TV watching and electronic games are familiar to many mainland Chinese families.  One recent online survey in China, conducted in response to the controversy over Chua’s book, found a majority of Chinese netizens ticking the box that stated, ‘Yes, starting from when I was little, my mother always said I’m not as good as other at this or that.’

Answer

a.          Piano practice [52]

b.          Homework [46]

(2)       the homework that never goes unfinished是較市井的口語化寫法,意思其實是the homework that never goes unfinished令同學迷惑。

On mountain slopes that receive plentiful rainfall, huge Douglas firs rise in towering columns.  These forest giants often grow to be as much as 90 metres tall, with diameters up to 3 metres.

Question: What might ‘forest giants’ refer to?

Answer: Douglas firs

According to the passage, what can grow to be as much as 90 metres tall,你如何答? 但你很容易會錯答成forest giants,因為forest giantsgrow to be as much as 90 metres tall的距離較近。

When I got out of the station, I spotted (看見;認出) Gilles and we walked together to a McDonald’s and sat down.  I was very angry with him.  He expected this.

Question: What might ‘this’ refer to?

Answer: The author’s anger with Gilles/the author was angry with Gilles

I was very angry with him,因為你不是文中的「I」。文中的「I」是指「作者」(the author)

I was very angry with him裡的him,因為這是不完整的答案(你日常生活也不會將話說得這樣糊塗,而考試是人生的小插曲)him是誰?

The guard led me into another room, and I put my things on the floor.  I looked around and notice that everyone had the same sleepy, vacant eyes.

Question: What might ‘everyone’ refer to?

Answer: everyone in the room/every person in the room/everybody in the room/every person in the said another room

When Kevin used an icebox of his own design to transport his butter to market, he found that customers would pass up the rapidly melting stuff in the tubs of his competitors to pay a premium price for his butter, still fresh and hard in neat, one-pound bricks.

Question: What might ‘the rapidly melting stuff ‘refer to?

Answer: the butter of the competitors/the butter of Kevin’s competitors

[Fantine is left alone, unemployed and destitute]

[FANTINE]
There was a time when men were kind
When their voices were soft
And their words inviting
There was a time when love was blind
And the world was a song
And the song was exciting
There was a time
Then it all went wrong

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung, no wine untasted

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
As they turn your dream to shame

He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came

And still I dream he'll come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream I dreamed.
