Learning English Through Debating

You are a member of the school debating club.  Your club is entering a debating contest and the motion is Nuclear power is the best source of energy for the future.  Decide whether you are for or against the motion and write your debate speech.  The members with the best speeches will be chosen to represent the school at the completion.

1.          debate speech的常用句,highlighted in pink
4.          可在文中用Todayyou以及my/our first/second speaker will look at 等,這是debate speech的元素,令你寫得更似一篇debate speech

Motion: Co-education should be adopted in all schools (這個題目在作文時不用寫,一開始就寫Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen

Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Today’s motion is that co-education should be adopted in all schools.  That is, environment should be provided for boys and girls to study together in schools.  We support the motion1 because we absolutely believe that co-education create ideal conditions for learning through making contact with the opposite sex.  [We will show you2 today on the side Affirmative2 the benefits of coeducation.]

1 除了We support the motion,可用We are for the motion。相反,可用We oppose the motion,或We are against the motion

Today’s motion is that(或者We’re here today to discuss the motion that),這裡的We will show you today,以及下文的But what we say is thatDon’t you see that
3 在香港,說辯論的「正方」是the side Affirmative,「反方」是the side Opposition。「作為正方」可以是on the side Affirmative,「作為反方」可以是on the side Opposition

There are four very sound reasons why you should support this motion.  Each one is strong enough to win the argument on its own, and when they are combined, the case is overwhelming.

Firstly, some parents send their children to all-girls or all-boys schools to minimize their contact with the opposite sex(異性).  But what we say is that by doing so, parents can minimize such contact only when their children are in school, but cannot stop their children from meeting others in the neighbourhood or through friends.  And if a child meets someone with whom she shares chemistry(產生化學作用的,即喜歡的), there is little a parent can do.  On the other hand, students of co-educational school will soon realize that differences in sex are nothing mysterious.  Indeed, freedom to mix with the opposite sex in school life induces a good amount of sensibility and respect for each other.  This is a valuable element of education which single sex schools do not provide.

Secondly, co-education promotes gender equality (性別平等), equal opportunities(平等機會) and a sense of fair competition between both sexes.  It encourages girls to prove that they can do as well as or even better than boys.  Furthermore, understanding, mutual respect and cooperation can be developed between boys and girls through school team projects.  The idea that co-education makes tom-boys out of girls, or it makes boys soft and effeminate, is just deceptive.

Thirdly, co-educational schools undoubtedly enjoy better discipline.  Don’t you see that boys under co-education tend to be more polite, reserved (含蓄的)and respectful?  Bad habits like smoking, drinking, gambling and using foul language(粗言穢語) are rare when boys and girls study together.  There is also plenty of evidence that co-education is key to promoting a healthy social life and fostering gender-equal society.  Our second speaker will develop this point. [My second speaker will look at this point, and my third speaker will look at the long-term benefits of the co-educational policy.]4

Our second speaker will look at the need for new immigrants to integrate harmoniously with Hong Kong societyOur second speaker will look at the sufferings of low-income earners in Hong Kong.

Fourthly, from an economic and administrative point of view, co-education can pull resources, man-power and facilities together.  A lot of time, effort and money can be saved as a result.  Parents can also feel more convenient and less troublesome when their sons and daughters can study together in the same school.

These are our main arguments.  I hope you will agree that they are utterly convincing and that it is necessary for co-education to be adopted in all schools.  Thank you.
