1.      Do you agreeQ8)或者explainQ11),沒有CAPITALIZED亦沒有bold,非常陰濕。

[3] Polls and studies confirm that seeing living, breathing animals in zoological facilities inspires children and adults to care about protecting marine mammals and their declining ocean environments.  A poll taken in 2005 found that the public was nearly unanimous in its acclaim for the education impact of marine life parks, zoos and aquariums.  Many respondents agreed that the experience of seeing animals in zoos could not be replicated by film or television.

[4] A recent study by Dr. Lance Miller, a behavioural biologist with San Diego Zoo, demonstrated an increase in conservation-related knowledge, attitudes and behavioural intentions immediately after guests viewed a dolphin show.  Three months later, in the next round of interviews, these guests reported that they were engaging in more conservation-related behaviour since their dolphin show experience.  They also retained what they had learned.  These findings echo those of a study conducted at Ocean Park about our dolphin interactive programme where, three months after their participation, guests’ positive attitudes towards the environment were still stronger than before the programme.

Question:

8. Do you agree with the statement that ‘seeing animals in zoos could not be replicated by film or television’ (lines 32-34)?  Why or why not.

Yes (指你agree – you can get close to animals / interact with the animals / touch the animals
No (指你不agree  watching animals on film or television allows you to see the animals up close, something you may not be able to do in a zoo.

Skills:

留意題目用了Do you agree(沒有加bold,甚麽警號都沒有),但do you agree 就表示要你自己發揮。

[5] Most Hong Kong families live in urban settings, increasingly withdrawn into an electric world of computer downloads, satellite media and video games.  Children are losing touch with nature and the animal world.  In a time of environmental challenges, zoos and aquariums are vital links to nature and wildlife.  They connect real-life people and real-life animals, and foster the understanding that it is more important, now than ever before, to conserve our natural environment.

Question:

11. a) According to paragraph 5, why are children losing touch with nature?  Give TWO different reasons (2 marks)

b) Explain how these reasons might cause children to lose touch with nature.

Answer

a i) live in urban settings

a ii) withdrawn into an electronic world (of computer downloads, satellite media and video games)

In any order, 1 mark each
b) urban settings physically remove people from nature // computer /video games are very exciting and more entertaining than visiting a zoo // young people like to play a lot of computer games

Skills:

[12] Circuses are even worse places for animals.  Their living conditions are deplorable, especially in travelling circuses where cages have to be small so that they can go on the road.  Training animals to perform tricks often involves starvation and cruelty.  Undercover investigations have repeatedly shown animals being beaten and given electric shocks.

[13] Attempts to defend amusement parks and circuses on the grounds that they ‘educate’ people about animals should not be taken seriously.  Such enterprises are part of the entertainment industry.  The most important lesson they teach impressionable young minds is that it is acceptable to keep animals in captivity for human amusement.  That is the opposite of the ethical attitude that we should be seeking to teach children.

Question:

22. ‘Keeping a pet at home is not the same as keeping an animal in a zoo.’  Use TWO ideas from the text to support this point of view. (2 marks)

Answer

(Not the same because …)

- pets are much smaller than most animals in zoos and are not confined to small cages

- zoos are commercial enterprises while keeping a pet is not

(1 mark for each point.  Accept any points which can be supported by information given in the text.  If more than two points are given, mark the first two points.)

Skills:

Use TWO ideas from the text嗎? Keeping a pet at hometext裡沒有的ideacommercial也是text裡沒有的idea

不過,如你只寫pets, unlike animals in zoos, are not kept in small cages應該也有分吧。

Keeping pets is not an enterprise but keeping animals in zoos is(沒有提commercial),相信也應有分。

Use TWO ideas from the text, If more than two points are given, mark the first two points所以,不要亂石投林,叫你寫兩項,就不要寫三項,徒費時間。

23. The texts presents two opposing views of educating children about animals.  Discuss which view you find most convincing and why (2 marks).

Peter Singer // second text // argument // second writer

- animals are forced to live in small spaces

- animals are forced to perform tricks

- commercial – only interested in making profit

- unethical – teaches people that keeping animals in confinement is acceptable
