The Call of the Wild野性的呼喚)出了一些reading questions。

Question

I would like to ask, is it possible that HKDSE paper one require some sort of knowledge towards classical writings (including Sherlock Holmes)?
If so, what could I do to get prepared for that?

Answer

I write this blog entry http://englishwizard.mysinablog.com/index.php?op=ViewArticle&articleId=3340763only because Part B2, Paper 1 of the practice papers for English Language, which were delivered by HKEAA to schools in January 2011, contains some reading questions on a passage from the novel The Call of the Wild野性的呼喚, and HKEAA is likely to use some passages from poems or classic novels for reading questions.

However, to do well in the reading and writing parts of English Language, knowledge of classical writings is something you do NOT need much or at all.  Rather,
(1) always try to read effectively by developing various skills needed for successful reading comprehension of different genres;
(2) read extensively, including papers, novels, dialogues (subtitles) and some poems, and surf the Internet in order to have maximum exposure to English; and
(3) listen to the radio and watch English TV may help comprehension as well as writing.
