Use context clues to infer the meaning of a word.  There are many different kinds of context clues.(用上下文推敲詞義。上下文提示有很多種。)

1.          Appositive(同位語,同位語緊貼要解釋的詞,最容易看見)
2.          Definition(定義,有時寫明means甚麽甚麽,有時不寫);
3.          Example(例子,給有關名詞舉例);
4.          Comparison(將第一物比作第物,你知第二物的解釋,也就明白第一物);
5.          Contrast(對比,例如一黑一白,你可以從白推知黑);
6.          A set of details(詳細資料,例如說曾蔭權小器,然後說他經常黑臉、樸克臉、臭臉,又愛反唇相稽).

See the examples below.

An appositive as a context clue
1.          The so-called Jungle of popular imagination, the tropical rain forest belt stretching around our planet at the Equator, has taken some 60 million years to evolve to its present state.
The blue words following “Jungle of popular imagination” explain what it is.Jungle of popular imagination之後的詞是它的同位語,解釋了何謂Jungle of popular imagination。)
2.          Homo Faber, Man the Builder, has tragically always seen the jungle as something alien.(這句的情況和第1句相同。)
3.          Good husbandry forest ecology, wisdom in planning, less greed and stupidity could keep Man and the delicate rain forest relationship in balance indefinitely.(留意同位語解釋的前後有時有破折號(-))

A definition as a context clue
4.          Just like it sounds, reverse competition means a market that drives prices up, not down.
The blue words following “reverse competition” explain or define what “reverse competition” is.
5.          These lawyers, developers, bankers, and real estate salespeople want the highest payments they can get for referring their clients to a particular title insurance company, money politely called “referral fees”.
The blue words preceding “referral fees” explain or define what the fees are.(定義不一定在後面,也可以在前面,如這一題。)
6.          The explorers landed in an alien place which was both foreign and strange to them.
The blue words following “which” actually define the word alien, which means strange or foreign.

An example as a context clue
7.          The bubbles in soda pop and other effervescent beverages can tickle your nose.
Soda pop is an effervescent beverage because it is bubbly.  Effervescent means “bubbly”.

A comparison as a context clue

8.          The smell of the flower was as compelling as the pull of a magnet on a paper clip.
The smell of the flower is compared to the strong attraction of a magnet, compelling in this particular context means attracting.

A contrast as a context clue
9.          My horse has been irascible today, even though she is usually good-tempered.
The words "even though" hint that the next part of the sentence will mean the opposite of the first part.  Irascible means “bad-tempered” or “easily angered”.

A set of details as context clue
10.      In the tropical forest belt, native tribes have their own “low-impact” life style, hunting, trapping, practicing a little cultivation.
The blue words are the details of a low-impact life style.
11.      The wolves appeared hostile as the hunters approached the den.  The animals bared their teeth and crouched as if preparing to spring.
The second sentence describes hostile actions(敵意的動作-露出牙齒、蹲伏、想撲出的樣子).  Hostile means “unfriendly” or “threatening”
12.          We had to wade through pages of legal jargon before we could sign the contract.

Question

In the above sentence, wade through means (reading causally/reading with efforts.)
wade through解作「辛苦地讀完」,但如果你不懂wade through,你應可從下文的before we could sign the contracts猜到wade throughreading with efforts。因為:如要簽合約,不應是reading casually(漫不經心地讀))
13.          Situation: Vivian and her parents are on a car journey.  Vivian’s father is driving.
          Mother: The light is different out here.  It’s softer.
          Vivian: It’s called smog.(烟霧;光化學污染)
          Father: You should be excited, Vi. You can stop sneaking cigarettes and just start taking deep breaths.

Question

In the above passage, sneaking cigarettes means
A.          going to buy cigarettes secretly.
B.          taking cigarettes to a place secretly.
C.          passing cigarettes to a person secretly
D.         smoking cigarettes secretly.
sneak可解作「走私」或「偷偷摸摸地做」,所以,單說sneaking cigarettes,你很難知道應作哪一個解釋。但是,上文說了smog(光化學污染)。所以,可以看出,father是在取笑女兒Vivian:既然有污染,你不用偷偷抽煙了,在這裡深呼吸就等於抽煙了。)
