What was it like to attend New Leaf?

[1] At New Leaf, making us into Hong Kong people did not mean clearing up what made us distinctive as ethnic minority individuals. [2] The teachers greed us as our parents did or as close as they could pronounce our names in Hindi or Vietnamese. [3] No one was ever scolded or punished for speaking in his or her mother tongue outside the classroom.  [4] Kareena told the class about his mother’s down quilt which she had made in India with the fine feathers of a thousand geese.  [5] Pit acted out how boys learned of fish in the Philippines.  [6] The Form 4 class was fascinated by the story of my travel on a stagecoach which nobody had even seen except in films.  [7] After a visit to the Hong Kong Museum of History and its collection of cultural objects closely related to the history of Hong Kong and the South China area, someone showed a scroll with a Chinese painting.  [8] Miss Cheung herself had a way of expressing wonder over these matters before a class, her eyes wide until they popped slightly.  [9] It was easy for me to feel that becoming a proud Hongkonger, as she said we should, did not mean refraining from self-identifying oneself as an ethnic minority individual.

d.          Both pride in being a Hongkonger and ethnic pride were developed in New Leaf.

Answer Key
1.          “New Leaf” (in [1]) refers to
a.          a town
b.          an primary school
d.          a teacher

2.          What were “these matters” (in [8]) over which Miss Cheung expressed wonder?
a.          a field trip taken by the Form 4 classfield trip是單數,題目的these matters是眾數,所以a不會是答案。)
b.          the collection of cultural objects at the Hong Kong Museum of History(是否答案?
c.           stories and objects from the children’s native land(這個答案最有概括性,storiesKareenaPit所說的故鄉經歷,objectsChinese painting等,所以c是答案。
d.          the ways in which children communicated.(這個有點像答案,但不及c全面。)

3.          According to the passage, which of the following is true (T), false (F), not stated(x)?
a.          Most of the students were from the Philippines, Vietnam and India.
b.          Hindi and Vietnamese were among the languages that were taught.
c.           Students did not insult each other’s ethnic backgrounds.
d.          Both pride in being a Hongkonger and ethnic pride were developed in New Leaf. (T)(這是全篇的主旨,看全文應知這句正確,第[9]句提及proud Hongkongers又同時說self-indentifying oneself as an ethnic minority individual,是點題句。

Steps in previewing a passage(預覽文章的步驟)

1.          Read the topic of the passage.  Use it to focus on important ideas.(利用文章的題目去找尋要點。)
2.          Notice any words/phrases that are repeated or set off by capital letters, italics, or bold type.(注意文章重複的、大楷的、斜體的或粗體的詞/片語。)
3.          Read the first and last sentences。
Title What was it like to attend New Leaf? Attend會令你想起attend a school(就讀於某學校)或attend a meeting(參加會議)嗎? 這個主旨在first and last sentences都提出,而中間是一些實例闡釋。(不過,要說明,題旨有時不在first and last sentences。)
