Narration的性質

l   Narrative writing (including imaginative writing) is actually a short story.  Candidates are asked to imagine/describe a significant/fantastic situation and should make a serious or light-hearted response, depending on the prompt.

l   Narrative writing(包括imaginative writng)其實是小故事。

Narrationtense

What shall I do in a journey to the Moon in 2030,就明顯要用future tense

l   1999年有條會考試要你想像在百貨公司的奇遇,你應知a past tense narrative is required,是要你用past tensenarrative(或imaginative),原文是:

One evening, for a joke, you and your friends decided to hide inside a large department store and stay there overnight.  You waited until the doors were locked and came out of your hiding place when there was no one around.

The picture below shows some of the strange things that happened in the store during the night.  Describe your adventure.

Not many candidates extended the story beyond the events depicted in the drawings…candidates made no attempt to give a rational explanation of the stranger events in the department store.

Your friend and you have had a wonderful adventure that you have never told anybody.  Describe the experience and how it affected you.

One summer day when I was sixteen, my friend Tony and I made an adventure to a mysterious (神秘的)island lying further south of the Lantau.  It was rumored(謠傳說)that the place hosted (原解「當東道本」,現解「有」)a large dolphin habitat(是最大的海豚棲地).

Sunrise found our boat approaching the island(船到時,正日出).  Some birds were circling around us(飛鳥在上空盤旋).  Many animals which I had never seen before clustered(叢集)on a low saddle of rocks(很多石頭形成的低平地帶).  A bright cloud, part of the pulsating(充滿生氣的)life that filled this fertile sea, enveloped us. In the sea, a large colony (群)of dolphins serenaded(像奏小夜曲的優美地叫).  Our approach didn’t bother the lovely creatures.  They seemed ready to greet us.

I dived below to see the graceful dolphins in their true element.  Tony was quick to join me on scuba(水肺).

Before we reached the dolphins, the water flashed(水閃)before us as we passed through a fish shoal(魚.  The fish swept across the underwater landscape (水下地境)and led us to the dolphins that shared these waters with them.

The dolphins acted like they had been expecting us.  First, they examined us, strangers in their world, with some curiosity, some barks(叫) and some mildly threatening poses(略帶威脅的姿勢) (公海豚).  Then, they were eager to impress us with their grace they launched into their dance(優美地游,像是要游給我們看).  It was a dance that I never forget.  The bulls (公海豚)approached us questioning our presence in their realm.  The cows (母海豚)were playful and relaxed.  The pups (幼海豚)were curious but (好奇) somewhat timid(膽小).

We had an ideal and unspoiled natural habitat(化外的自然生境) there.

One month after, Tony and I tried to re-visit the place but what we saw there was just some floating rubbish(漂垃圾).

We have become environmentalists since then. “I still feel it strange that the dolphins seemed expecting us during our expedition,” said Tony to me yesterday.

Points to note when writing narratives

narratives要注意:

l  Think about the prompt. Brainstorm some ideas. Pick the idea you like best.

l  Write what you would do? How people or things would react? How the situation would end up?

l  Add sensory details. How do you feel? How do people feel? How do things look like?

l  Add realistic conversation, but keep it short.

l  Add some personal change. Write dynamic characters. Sum up the significance of the experience to you in one or two sentences.

l  Proofread your work. Proper spelling? Good grammar? Correct punctuation?
