2.          Interrupting dominant candidates politely

3.          Encouraging weaker candidates to speak

Keeping the discussion on the right track

1.          Excuse me, [Mr. Chan], that is an interesting point, but I am afraid that we are getting off the topic of [Christmas Party].

2.          I’m sorry.  I think we have to return to the topic of [the advantages of abolishing school uniform].

3.          An interesting point, but we are talking about [Christmas Party], I think it will be great to ….

Interrupting dominant candidates politely

The secret is to agree with the dominant candidates first and then redirect the conversation to another candidate or the group.

1.      Good point, [name of another candidate], what do you think about [inviting a teacher to act as our M.C.]?

2.      [Mr. Chan], I agree with your point about [budgeting] but what does the rest of the group think? 

 Encouraging weaker candidates to speak

Ask the weaker candidate a yes/no question

1.      [Miss Lee], do you agree with the idea of [organizing a music party]?

2.      [Miss Lee], do you have anything to add?

Ask the weaker candidate to choose between two options

3.      [Miss Lee], do you think we should organize [a picnic or a party]?

Ask the weaker candidate for views on a point

4.      [Miss Lee], what do you think about [organizing a music party]?

5.      What do you think, [Miss Lee]?

6.      [Miss Lee], what do you think of this idea?
