Choose a suitable heading for each paragraph from the list below

a)      Sex equality in security

b)      A comparison

c)      A question

d)      A thorough method

e)      A hideaway

f)       A disguised order

1)      Chai Kau (柴九was leading Laughing Laughing哥)and Fala (法拉)toward a decrepit warehouse.  The warehouse served as Uncle 4(四叔)'s hideout and was well protected.  Fala glanced about her, all her senses on high alert.  Anyone they passed could be a villain.

2)      She tugged on Laughing’s sleeve.  “Uncle 4 is terrifying, is he?” Fala whispered.

3)      “He’s much like myself,” Laughing answered, “absent my merciful nature and sense of fair play.” He grinned, and Fala shivered.

4)      As Fala and Laughing stepped inside a small entry room, Chai Kau swung around, blocking their path.  “No weapons,” he said.  “Remove them, please.”  Fala could tell from his tone that the “please” did not make his sentence any more of a request.  It was an order.  “Of course,” Laughing said cheerfully.  He handed over his pistol and his knife, and Fala followed suit.

5)      But as they stepped forward, Chai Kau held up his hand and eyed Fala. “Did you think because you are a woman, we would not suspect you of treachery?” he asked.  “Remove, please.” Fala sighed and pulled off her coat, revealing two more hidden knives, tucked into the lining. She started forward again but Chai Kau stopped her.  “Remove.  Please,” he repeated. Fala tried to protest, but it was no use.  She was forced to turn over each of her hidden weapons, one by one.

6)      To add insult to injury, she was also ordered to change into a robe that would allow no weapons to remain hidden.  Glaring at the men around her, Fala cinched the belt on her blue silk robe tighter and tugged it down, hoping to cover her legs a bit more.

Answer Key

Explanatory notes

1)      E

Hideout (in the text) hideaway (as an option) → a synonym trap

2)      C

This paragraph is about a question asked by Fala, but does not contain any word like question/asked → it may defeat the keyword-finding skill

3)      B

Like Paragraph 2, Paragraph 3 is about a comparison to Chai Kau made by Laughing himself, but does not contain the word comparison or its synonym  → sometimes, it is just more useful to try to understand the text directly instead of looking for the keyword

4)      F

The hint is in the wording “[T]he “please” did not make his sentence any more of a request.  It was an order.”(雖然用了「please」,但說得一點也不像請求,是命令。)  Disguised means “hiding the true form”(掩飾的)。

5)      A

The hint is this sentence: “Did you think because you are a woman, we would not suspect you of treachery?” he asked.(以為

This question tests your ability to make inference from the text.(選項的sex equality in security (保安面前性別平等)考你從原文推理的能力。)

6)      D

The hint is this sentence: “[S]he was also ordered to change into a robe that would allow no weapons to remain hidden.” This question tests your ability to make inference from the text.(所以,換袍是一個徹底辦法,這條也是考你從原文推理的能力。)
