1.          An infinitive is the word to followed by the simple present form of a verb. (動詞現在式加toinfinitive

Ø   When the infinitive follows some verbs as the direct object, the to may be droppede.g. He helped write the program. Infinitive 如跟在help等動詞之後作直接動詞,to可省去。)

2.          An infinitive phrase serves as a noun, adjective, or adverb. (不定詞片語可用作nounadjective adverb,見以下例子)

3.          An infinitive phrase is an infinitive plus an object, and/or modifiers. (不定詞片語=不定詞+受詞及/或修飾語,見以下例子)

In the following examples, the infinitive is italicized and the infinitive phrase is underlined. (在以下各例,不定詞斜體,不定詞片語劃了底線。)

Infinitive as a Noun:

l   He helped to write the program.to write the program object) (他協助寫程式) 

In to write the program, the programobject of “to write” 

l   To work with him is to learn patience.To work with himsubject; to learn patiencecomplement) (和他一起工作是對忍耐的學習。) 

In To work with him, with him a prepositional phrase modifying “to work”

In to learn patience, patience object of “to learn” 

Infinitive as an Adverb:

l   He shouted to get our attention.to get out attentionadverbial phrase of purpose)(他大叫,想我們注意。) 

In to get our attention, “our attention” the direct object of “to get” 

l   More and more people are using C.V. to fabricate a past and to create a future. to fabricate a past and to create a futureadverbial phrase of purpose)(越來越多人用履歷表揑造過去、創造未來。) 

In to fabricate a past and to create a future, “a past” and “a future” are the direct objects of “to fabricate” and “to create” respectively. 

l   The singer staged a charity show to solicit funds for The Community Chest.to solicit funds for The Community Chestadverbial phrase of purpose)(那位唱手用慈善表演為公益金籌款。) 

In to solicit funds for The Community Chest, funds the direct object of “to solicit”,  for the community chest a prepositional phrase modifying “to solicit”.

Infinitive as an Adjective:

l   Helen was looking for a way to earn more money. to earn more moneyan adjectival phrase modifying “a way”)(Helen正設法掙多點錢。)

In to earn more money, more money the direct object of “to earn”  

l   The proposal to shorten the working hours was cold-shouldered by the employer’s organisation. to shorten the working hoursan adjectival phrase modifying “the proposal”)(僱主組織對縮減工時的建議反應冷淡。)

In to shorten the working hours, the working hours the direct object of “to extend”

l   We have had an occasional problem with his tendency to shout at customers. to shout at customersan adjectival phrase modifying “tendency”)(他很容易就對客人大聲叫喊,有時給我們帶來問題。)

In to shout at customers, at customers a prepositional phrase modifying “to shout” 

l   I am bowled over to be awarded this prize.to be awarded this prizean adjectival phrase modifying “blowed over”)(獲頒這個獎項,我非常驚喜。)

 In to be awarded this prize, this price an indirect object in a passive voice structure.
