凡是無關的、離題的句子(sentence)或點子(idea),即使你覺得很有趣,都要割愛刪除(take it out of the paragraph or essay),或者搬到下一段發展(develop it in the next paragraph)。

Exercise 1

Look at the following topic sentence:

Lan Kwai Fong (蘭桂坊) in the Central District on Hong Kong Island is a real lively hot spot.

Which of the following sentences will help to support this idea?

1.      There are a collection of over80 bars, clubs, and restaurants in Lan Kwai Fong.

2.      A tragedy happened in Lan Kwai Fong at the New Year's Eve of 1992.

3.      You can know new friends there, both locals and visitors from foreign countries.

4.      You can sometimes see clowns or jugglers there.

5.      People can sit in the bars and watch all kinds of people pass by.

6.      Lan Kwai Fong is relatively quiet in September because of the heat.

Exercise 2

Read the following paragraphs.  For each one, aunderline the topic sentence and bstrike through any sentences that do not support the main idea in the topic sentence.

1.           The most obvious reason to recycle waste is to save resources.  Paper companies can save trees if they collect old paper, like newspapers and computer paper, and make the used paper into new paper.  Picking up all the trash paper (廢紙)along the road also makes the environment neat and clean.  By saving trees, they save the earth resources.  Companies that make aluminum cans (鋁罐) can also save resources.  Since aluminum is a material that comes from the earth, there is a limited supply of it.  Some day it will be gone.  So, if we recycle aluminum cans(將鋁罐循環再用), we can use the same aluminum over and over again.  In this way we conserve the earth’s resources(保育地球的資源).

2.           Mr. Thomas was the worst teacher I ever had.  He taught general science in tenth grade.  The reason he was so bad was that he tried to embarrass students He would call on someone to answer even when he knew that person didn’t know the answer to the question.  Then, he would tease (取笑)the person and says things like “you’re stupid” (畢你咁蠢架你) or “that was the easiest question I have.”  (我問你果係最淺架喎)All of the students hated going to his class(討厭上他的課).  Of course, Ms. Lewis, the history teacher, was pretty bad, too.  I think Mr. Thomas is the reason I’m now a business major.  I’m looking forward to a career as a CPA.

2.          Mr. Thomas was the worst teacher I ever had.  He taught general science in tenth grade.(這句有關嗎?作者在下文說I’m now a business major,有Thomasscience他就不修讀science之意。)  The reason he was so bad was that he tried to embarrass students He would call on someone to answer even when he knew that person didn’t know the answer to the question.  Then, he would tease (取笑) the person and says things like “you’re stupid” (畢你咁蠢架你) or “that was the easiest question I have.”  (我已經揀最淺果條問你喎)All of the students hated going to his class(討厭上他的課).  Of course, Ms. Lewis, the history teacher, was pretty bad, too.  I think Mr. Thomas is the reason I’m now a business major. Thomasscience。」)  I’m looking forward to a career as a CPA.
