The Sale of Goods Ordinance of Hong Kong (Cap. 26) (“SOGO”) deals with consumer protection.  SOGO is intended to give protection to the consumer who buys goods from someone who sells the goods in the course of business.

A fish steeped in the chef¹s own special marinade(浸在廚師秘製醃汁的一條魚)所以,macerate = 浸軟;steep in = 浸。

My best friend Regina divorced her husband Donald, who is also my good friend, just two months after they were married.  I wondered why it would be so unexpected.  Then it hit(這個hit指「突然想到」) me Donald did seem to hit it off (這個hit it off 「撻着」with a bridesmaid during the wedding party.

Nothing is better than a good night in one of the best bars in Tsim Sha Tsui, provided that you do not get involved in a bar fight!

That night, we were having a party in a Tsim Sha Tsui bar to celebrate the birthday of Jenny, a teen who became my girlfriend a week ago.   Jenny, I, our friends and the friends of our friends were all as drunk as skunks(爛醉).

Indeed, I liked Jenny even when intoxicated(喝醉).  She had a slim figure, long shapely legs(修長均稱的腿)and G-cup breasts/a G-cup bust (G), although some of my friends warned me that she was just a slut (蕩女)/a wild(冶), sexy soubrette(輕浮女子).  That night, she sashayed(腰姿款擺地走;扭下扭下)in boots and a slinky (因貼身而性感的)red mini-skirt, talking flirtatiously (賣弄風騷地) with nearly everyone in the bar about everything.

Nobody Knows What’s Going on因為(1) everyone thinks he knows what is going on in a world that is more complicated (or random) than they realize; (2) we assess matters only after the fact [and therefore think we are insightful]; (3) we overvalue factual information and the authoritative and learned people

Parallelism in writing means that we should express similar ideas in a consistent way.  Elements alike in meaning should be alike in construction.  Parallel forms build clarity and power.  They make your writing flow more smoothly, and help you get better grades.

In a sentence which is “not parallel”, similar ideas are expressed in different ways.  A non-parallel form is awkward and confusing to the reader.

This is a sentence in parallel form(這句是平行結構):

In the summer before university, I waited tables, sold newspapers, and even delivered take-outs.

And this is a nonparallel form(這句不是平行結構):

In the summer before university, I was a waiter at a restaurant, worked in a newspaper stall, and was a take-outs delivery boys. (“Was a writer”, “worked in a newspaper stall” and “was a take-out delivery boys” are unparallel.)

Head for/towards something

l   Crab Ho jumped on a bus heading for Tsuen Wan.

l   It is time I was heading for home.(我該回家了。)

It is time I was abed.(我早該上床上睡覺了。)

例:Alan is 21 and it is time he dated girls Alan二十一歲,早該和女生拍拖了。)

時序履歷表的基本結構:是contact Information + objective/career summary + detailed work experience + education

功能履歷表的基本結構是:contact Information + career summary + objective +  areas of expertise/strengths/accomplishments + brief work experience + education

An advertisement on the strengths of the Standard is used in this exercise with a view to highlighting the importance of reading a broad range of genres (fiction, magazines, newspapers, posters, leaflets, advertisements, user manuals, speeches, etc).  I would also like to take this opportunity to draw your attention to the following advice from the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment:

Learners can be encouraged to notice and read the signs, display boards, notices and advertisements in their immediate environment. These materials can promote the development of functional reading skills and help learners to relate English Language learning to daily life.
